Rochester Rep brings 'Tick, tick... Boom!' to the stage

Oct. 2—ROCHESTER — Before "Rent" upended what people expect from Broadway musicals, show writer Jonathan Larson was determined to do something to make a name for himself.

Rochester Repertory Theatre brings a show depicting the pent up desire and energy behind Larson with their production of "Tick, tick... Boom."

Larson's semi-autobiographical musical takes the audience on Larson's ride into the musical theater industry. The show, directed by Philip Muehe, opens Oct. 6, 2023, with Sam Hildestad playing Larson and Robyn Loewen directing the music.

That Theatre Company has built a following and reputation with its repertoire of original, adult-oriented shows. "The Spookiest House on the Block: An R-Rated Comedy" is no exception.

Performed at the Rochester Civic Theater's black box, the show features the company's largest, most ambitious set to date with a spooky, corpse-heavy set which was created by set designer Brett Conrad. The show opens Friday, Oct. 6 and runs through Oct. 21.

Families are invited to see the progress and plans for changes at Soldiers Field Park. Destination Medical Center is teaming with city officials and Kraus-Anderson Construction along with Rochester Local to a Big Dig 2023 event.

Kids can see construction equipment up close and enjoy playing on a sand pile. Adults can learn about the projects underway at the park including a new aquatics area with a lazy river, three water slides, a 50-meter lap pool, a renovated bathhouse, a shallow pool, a splash pad.

Plans also include a new inclusive playground and shelter at Roy Sutherland playground on the east side of the park as well as new basketball courts, and a trail connection providing a boardwalk and multi-use trail.

Thesis Beer Project is hosting a book launch of Rochester author Tony Wirt's newest horror novel, "Just Stay Away." The book has been a top seller in the horror genre among Amazon Prime Members through Amazon First Reads in the Kindle Store.

The book will also be available at Garden Party Books.

Wirt will be signing books at Thesis Saturday, Oct. 7 and returning to Rochester Oct. 11 as part of a book tour along with Minnesota native and bestselling author Jess Lourey.

Fall is here which means winter is around the corner. On the plus side, so are winter sports.

The Rochester Curling Club is hosting a Learn to Curl workshop. People will get two hours of instruction on the ice. Club members will teach the curling curious how to throw a stone, how to sweep and give the novice players a chance to play a short game. All equipment is provided.

People who want to curl are asked to bring clean, low heel, closed-toed shoes or boots to wear on the ice.
