Robert De Niro has never held back when it comes to his opinions of Donald Trump, and on Monday he appeared on "The View" to share his thoughts on the impeachment of the president.
The Irishman star made it clear he believes the proceedings are critically important and should proceed no matter what.
"We have to do this," he said. "We have to go through the motions, symbolically, it means something. It's a taint on his presidency. More than a taint, it's a stain. One that he deeply deserves. So, yes, we will go through it and take our chances. We have to take out chances no matter what."
"He's going to try to use it, then he got ahead of it, then he beat it like a gangster — 'I beat the rap,' like the Teflon Don," he said to the amusement of the audience. "He has to take that punishment, he has to pay the consequences. That's how I feel.
"He did something wrong. He has to pay for it, period," he said.
People on social media had reactions to the actor's take on the topic.
"I wish more celebrities would out there thoughts on this critical time that Trump has put our nation into. Disgraceful and now our country is the laughingstock of the world," one person wrote.
"Impeachment may be dead on arrival in the senate but the information will be out there for voters to see," another said.
"Love that brilliant actor. A real man & he’s the opposite of what cowards represent. Keep speaking the truth Robert De Niro!" a third commented.
At least some people disagreed with De Niro. "It's all good, because what's happening is what I said would happen. His support is growing, his rallies are growing He will not be removed, he will be reelected. And all of this is the direct result of liberal behavior," one wrote.
De Niro has been a frequent critic of Trump, most famously saying, "I'm gonna say one thing: F--- Trump," during the 2018 Tony Awards.
