Robert De Niro Admits He Doesn't 'Do the Heavy Lifting' Raising Baby with Tiffany Chen: 'She Does the Work'

The actor and girlfriend Tiffany Chen welcomed their first baby together, his seventh, in April

Robert De Niro is getting candid about his parenting responsibilities.

The 80-year-old actor, who welcomed his seventh baby, daughter Gia Virginia, in April, his first with girlfriend Tiffany Chen, recently opened up about life with his new little one, telling The Guardian it's "going okay."

“It doesn’t get easier,” he shared of parenting. “It is what it is. It’s okay. I mean, I don’t do the heavy lifting. I’m there, I support my girlfriend. But she does the work. And we have help, which is so important.”

Asked if the Silver Linings Playbook star enjoys fatherhood, he replied, "Of course I do," adding he enjoys "all of it."

"With a baby it’s different [than] with my 11-year-old. My adult children. My grandchildren. It’s all different," he continued.

“Well, I don’t talk to the adult children the way I talk to my baby or the way I speak to my 11-year-old, though she’s pretty smart," he went on to explain.

In May, De Niro revealed that he welcomed his seventh child during an interview with ET Canada while discussing parenting and his recent film, About My Father. His costar Kim Cattrall confirmed shortly after that De Niro had welcomed the baby with girlfriend Chen.

De Niro and Chen first sparked dating rumors with a PDA-filled outing in August 2021. The pair met years prior when filming a movie together in 2015. Chen, a martial arts instructor, had a role in The Intern, which starred De Niro.

The actor officially introduced his daughter to the world on an episode of CBS Mornings in May. Revealing her full name — Gia Virginia Chen De Niro — the actor shared a photo of her and said she was born weighing 8 lbs., 6 oz. on Thursday, April 6.

While later appearing on TODAY, De Niro opened up about becoming a father to a newborn "at this stage and age."

"It feels great, yeah," he said at the time.

Asked how his parenting has evolved over the years, the father of seven said, "I have certain awareness — when you’re older you have awareness of certain things in life, dynamics, everything, family dynamics."

He continued, "You can’t avoid learning certain things and how you can deal with those and manage them and this and that, the usual. It's amazing, but I'm very happy about it."
