Married since 2005, Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey make up one of Hollywood’s greatest power couples. After all, in addition to adding an Oscar to their home decor this weekend, the pair have said countless adorable things about each other over the years.

And, following the Oppenheimer star’s latest win, the two sat down with People and shared some secrets about their relationship. Overall, it seems like the pair always prioritizes one important thing: time.

“We do have a two-week rule, which often feels too long, but we don’t go more than two weeks without seeing each other and the family being together,” Susan told the outlet.

As a reminder, Susan and Robert share kids Exton, 12, and Avri, 9, while the actor also has his son Indio, 30, from a previous marriage.

“Fortunately, we prefer to be a traveling circus when we can be,” the producer added.

With that said, however, the couple is also fully aware that plans can be quite unpredictable. “You keep the basic rule of two weeks, and then you don’t try and think too far ahead, because so much of what we do is oddly unpredictable,” Susan admitted. “You just never know.”

“Someone might get sick, or there might be a shutdown, or this or that,” she continued. “So you just have to have some basic things in place, and then you have to be willing to flow with the rest of it.”

With that said, it seems like Susan’s role as a producer provides the flexibility they need to make the two-week rule work. “The good news is I’m not in front of the camera, and so as a producer I end up with a little bit more flexibility in terms of location, of where I would need to be,” she said. “I really admire and have a lot of empathy for couples who both have to be in front of the camera, because you get stuck and you have to make those choices.”

With a wife as understanding and committed as Susan, it’s no wonder that she and Robert have made it work for so long.
