Let it be known that Robbie Williams stands with Taylor Swift. The former Take That singer has slammed “twat” Damon Albarn for falsely claiming that Swift “doesn’t write her own songs” back in January.

“I think that when people say [other musicians don’t write their own songs], what they’re actually doing is having a wank about themselves,” Williams said in a new feature with NME. “It’s true! You know, it’s like, why don’t you cut the middle man out — just get a few ribs removed and give yourself a nosh, you twat!”

The pop star went on: “Because all you’re doing is going, ‘Hey, I’m fucking amazing!’ Nothing good comes from it in any way, other than it’s a sort of dopamine hit for themselves, going, ‘Do you know – I’m a real one.’ OK. Good for you. Fuck off.”

In case you need the refresher: In an interview about his new album The Nearer the Fountain, More Pure the Stream FlowsAlbarn discussed his plans to play an entire concert on just the piano. When the interviewer said that Swift’s recent music would make for good solo piano material, Albarn snapped that “she doesn’t write her own songs” on the basis that she sometimes enlists other co-writers.

Not that we needed anyone else’s concurrence that Swift deserves songwriting credit, but Williams has now joined a number of other notable songwriters who’ve come to her defense since Albarn’s comments. Her frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff voiced his concerns over the Gorillaz frontman’s flat-out lie, saying: “I don’t care if Damon Albarn or anyone likes or doesn’t like something, but to unequivocally make a statement that isn’t true… Isn’t that kind of everything that’s wrong with our world at the moment? People talking about shit that they have no clue about?”

Liam Gallagher also sided with Swift, arguing that her co-writing with others doesn’t negate her own songwriting skills: “All them fucking Gorilla albums are co-writes, aren’t they?” he jeered. Swift herself also responded to Albarn, tweeting: “I was such a big fan of yours until I saw this. I write ALL of my own songs. Your hot take is completely false and SO damaging. You don’t have to like my songs but it’s really fucked up to try and discredit my writing. WOW.”

Albarn then responded: “I totally agree with you. i had a conversation about songwriting and sadly it was reduced to clickbait. I apologise unreservedly and unconditionally. The last thing I would want to do is discredit your songwriting. I hope you understand.”

Most recently, Albarn co-wrote Gorillaz’s upcoming album Cracker Island, slated to drop February 24th. He’ll want to stay on Williams’ good side here on out, considering how Williams (brilliantly) behaved in his feud with neighbor Jimmy Page.
