“9-1-1: Lone Star”’s Rob Lowe Teases ‘Insane’ Train Derailment Arc in Season 5 (Exclusive)

"I'm happy that we're back with this," Lowe tells PEOPLE about the three-episode arc

Rob Lowe is more than ready for 9-1-1: Lone Star's new season!

It's been a year since the season 4 finale aired, and Lowe, 60, who stars as Captain Owen Strand in the series, opened up to PEOPLE about fans' growing excitement to see the show return in the fall.

"I hear that out in the world, people saying, 'When's it coming back, Captain Strand? What's going on?' I'm happy that we're back with this insane three-part special event — train derailment," says Lowe at Fox's upfront red carpet at The Ritz-Carlton, New York, NoMad on Monday, May 13.

The actor says the new set is "everything."

"I mean, first, you just can't believe how big it is," he explains. "I was taking pictures on the set, videos on the set, and sending that to everybody I know, but you just can't believe that this is not a $200 million movie - that's what it looks like."

"That we're able to do that and deliver it is like, as an actor and a producer, that's the thing I'm really really proud of," adds Lowe. "I put that up against anybody. It's impossible to do what we do on a weekly basis, but we do it, and I love that people love it."

Along with wearing various hats on 9-1-1: Lone Star, Lowe has been working on Season 2 of Netflix's Unstable, premiering Thursday, Aug. 1, and The Floor, a game show he produces and hosts, which recently got picked up for two more seasons.

He tells PEOPLE that he's been able to manage his busy schedule with "a lot of sleep" and "meditation."

"Working out, you know, getting out. I'm wall to wall here in New York, but I'm gonna make sure I get my reservoir run in Central Park," he adds. "So, and then you know, going home to my wonderful wife and dogs and seeing my boys when I can. Happy as a little clam!"

Fox confirmed that filming for Season 5 of the series began in March through a video on Instagram.

The video showed Lowe standing behind his various castmates as he smiled from ear to ear, telling the camera, "Hey everybody! The 126 is back at work, and we will see you this fall on Fox."
