Rob Lowe sitcom, and a medical drama get series orders at Fox

Fox has picked up a new comedy for next season that will bring Rob Lowe back to primetime. The network has given series orders to comedy The Grinder and medical drama Rosewood, EW has learned.

Lowe’s The Grinder tells the story of a beloved TV lawyer who takes over his family’s small-town law firm when his hit series ends. Fred Savage also stars as his brother, while Mary Elizabeth Ellis, William Devane and Hana Hayes make up the rest of the cast.

An odds-on favorite for getting a name change before this fall, The Grinder hails from Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel, who will write and executive-produce with Lowe, Nicholas Stoller and Jake Kasdan, the pilot’s director.

Rosewood is an investigative series that centers around the brilliant Dr. Beaumont Rosewood, Jr. (Morris Chestnut), the top private pathologist in all of Miami. As owner of one of the most sophisticated, state-of-the-art independent labs in the country, he finds the secrets in bodies that others usually miss. Despite being constantly surrounded by death, Rosewood is obsessed with life and savors every moment. His eternal optimism will frustrate the cynical female detective (Jaina Lee Ortiz) he often works with, but she can’t argue with the results that his unique perspective provides.

Todd Harthan will write and executive-produce with Wyck Godfrey, Marty Bowen and Richard Shepard, who helmed the pilot. Maggie Elizabeth Jones, Anna Konkle and Gabrielle Dennis also star.

The news follows a number of series orders across the networks, including NBC, The CW and CBS.
