Rob Lowe has a lot to look forward to as he heads into a new decade. And as someone known for keeping a toned physique over the years, the 9-1-1: Lone Star actor typically has no problem staying healthy.

However, as he approaches his 60th birthday next month, Lowe tells PEOPLE that he’s really hoping to focus on improving his diet so that it matches his active lifestyle. He admits that his willpower is nonexistent whenever he gets a sweet tooth and he learned back in his 30s that “I can’t eat like I'm in college anymore.”

At the time, Lowe turned to Atkins for their low-calorie snacks, which is why he recently teamed up with the company, calling it an “organic” partnership.

“I have plenty of willpower right up until the moment that I have absolutely no willpower,” he tells PEOPLE with a laugh. “So I always make sure that at night when my sweet tooth is going crazy, I have the chocolate peanut butter cups and things like that, which to me taste absolutely as good as the original versions, which are a pack of sugar. So I need to be prepared for the times when my willpower flies out the window.”

Because his cravings tend to be his weakness, Lowe says reeling in his diet will likely come from moderation rather than cutting out his favorites.

“I'm trying to be even more disciplined now as I'm older just because as you get older, you need to watch what you eat even more than when you were younger,” he says. “So I tried to cut sugar completely as my new year's resolution. And now I'm figuring, okay, that's not sustainable for me, but how do I really watch my sugar consumption?”

Although he’s hopeful about making improvements in his diet, Lowe notes that he’s never struggled when it comes to having a good grasp on fitness, boasting that he feels “better than I’ve ever felt.”

The Wayne’s World star says he’s lucky to have natural motivation and is always willing to stay active.

“I can't wait to train or to do something physical,” he says. “I have very good friends and family that have to be dragged into doing something physical… that would be super tough to overcome.”

“I am blessed that I really enjoy physical exertion and adventure,” he adds. “So if I'm not on a set, I build my entire day around what activity I'm going to do. It might be a paddle in the ocean, a hike, running sprints on the track, pickleball, tennis. I'm pretty much up for anything.

Lowe explains that it’s simply his lifestyle and he tries to “keep myself at 75-80 percent of my prime health” so that if a movie or TV show requires him to be in shape, he doesn’t need to do much work.

His goal for his 60s? Stay active without getting injured. Lowe says he’s trying to find the balance between “longevity and consistency” and “non-injury and pushing myself as hard as I ever did.”

“The challenge for me is a day off means a day off but I want to continue to do stuff,” The West Wing actor says. “I really have to push myself to say, no, no, this is the day where it's okay to sit on the couch and watch football. I love a good sauna, I love the cold plunge, and I've become reacquainted with the value of just a long walk, which I used to think was a waste of time, and I now know differently.”

“I feel better than I've ever felt. And I think part of it is because I'm more cognizant of self-care. I'm as strong as I've ever been,” he tells PEOPLE, noting that he’s excited for year 60. “I remember being intimidated turning 40. I remember being intimidated turning 50, and this is no difference. And just like those milestones, the closer I get, the better I feel about it.”
