'Roadhouse' is Coming to Netflix in July for Your Viewing Pleasure
July is typically the month that tentpole blockbusters drop in theaters, but that requires you to go outside and who has the energy for that? That’s especially true when you have a whole litany of Netflix options that are worthy of your queue’s attention. When the pool seems too far away and the theater is just too expensive, fall back on that monthly subscription you give to Netflix. With a bit of comedy, drama, horror, and the best kind of garbage (Roadhouse) there is no reason for you to leave the house at all.
Caddyshack (July 1)
When you get Chevy Chase and Bill Murray in one film together, you’re contractually obligated to watch it. Fortunately, that’s exactly the case with Caddyshack, the 1980 comedy about the goings on at Bushwood Country Club and its newest caddie. He could never have guessed the insane people he’d come across, including the high brow member he ends up carrying the bag for. It is one of the best sports comedies to ever be released, so don’t sleep on this one.
Cloverfield (July 1)
Cloverfield managed to make found footage feel fresh in a time when the gimmick was falling out of style. Leave it to JJ Abrams to take a monster movie and make it a critical success. Following a bit of a documentarian style, Lizzy Caplan stars in the 2008 film that went on to spawn a couple sequels (none better than the original though).
Philadelphia (July 1)
Philadelphia tackled HIV/AIDS while the world was still terrified to utter the disease’s name. Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington lead the 1993 film about a man hiding his homosexuality and HIV diagnosis from coworkers as his condition worsens. Hanks took the Academy Award that year, and Philadelphia opened up a conversation about homophobia and acceptance that was only being had on the fringe at the time.
Rain Man (July 1)
Rain Man is Tom Cruise’s most endearing performance of his career. Playing the brother of an autistic man named Raymond (Sean Penn), Rain Man follows the quirky relationship that develops when Charlie (Cruise) returns home following his father’s death. But when his father’s estate is tied to Raymond, Charlie decides that he and Raymond are stuck with one another.
Roadhouse (July 1)
The thing is, Roadhouse is pure trash, which is also why Roadhouse is so good. Playing a vigilante bouncer that was plucked out of New York City to be a “cooler” for a bar in Jasper, Missouri (??), Dalton (Patrick Swayze) steps into the tightest light wash jeans ever to bring peace to the rowdy town of Jasper. Yeah, just take it in yourself.
Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns (July 9)
Mary Poppins is an impossible act to follow, but damn if Emily Blunt doesn’t give it her all. Flanked by a solid cast including Lin-Manuel Miranda, the film is all about Mary’s much needed return when the Banks children face losing their childhood home. Before that can be saved though, Mary reminds the family of all the things they’ve lost in her absence.
The Break Up (July 16)
Murder Mystery is fine all on its own, but if you want the best rom-com of Jennifer Aniston’s career, it’s firmly The Break Up. Following the slow burn disaster that comes when a long term relationship falls apart, Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn are comedic perfection together. Also, if your girlfriend asks for a dozen lemons, get her a dozen lemons. It's not that hard.
Inglourious Basterds (July 22)
Inglourious Basterds is one of Quentin Tarantino’s best projects. Set in WWII France, there’s some serious revisionist history that happens in the fight against the Nazis, but it’s all for the better. Brad Pitt’s campy Southern accent might draw you in, but Diane Kruger’s badass German actress will keep you around until the end.
