Riverside County sheriff's deputy hits and kills pedestrian while driving in Moreno Valley

An on-duty Riverside County Sheriff's deputy hit and killed a pedestrian while driving in Moreno Valley early Thursday.

The crash happened was reported at 3:54 a.m. around Cactus Avenue and Heacock Street, near a postal distribution center, according to a press release from the sheriff's department. The release did not identify the deputy or the pedestrian who was hit.

Deputies gave medical aid to the pedestrian, who was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics once they arrived. The deputy was not responding to an emergency at the time of the crash, according to the release. It did not mention whether anyone else was in the car.

The crash is being investigated by the California Highway Patrol, which did not immediately respond to a request for information.
