“Riverdale ”stars Madelaine Petsch, Lili Reinhart, and Camila Mendes reunite at “The Strangers: Chapter 1” premiere

The Riverdale gang is back together.

Camila Mendes and Lili Reinhart joined their former costar Madelaine Petsch on the red carpet at the premiere of Petsch's new horror film The Strangers: Chapter 1 on Thursday night. “Feeling so incredibly lucky to have my girls through every chapter of life,” Petsch wrote on Instagram.

The trio of actresses starred on the CW’s high school drama adaptation of Archie Comics for seven seasons, from 2017 to 2023. Mendes played Veronica Lodge, Reinhart played Betty Cooper, and Petsch portrayed Cheryl Blossom. The series also starred KJ Apa as Archie Andrews and Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones.

Petsch leads the new horror film, which is the first of three consecutive films in the Strangers series directed by Renny Harlin. All three films will release this year, and are based on the 2008 film The Strangers. Petsch plays Maya, who must fend off three mysterious masked visitors at an isolated Airbnb in Oregon.

The original film starred Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman as the central couple, and spawned a 2018 sequel, The Strangers: Prey at Night.

Last year, Harlan told Entertainment Weekly about the process of casting Petsch and her costar Froy Gutierrez. "We looked long and hard for our scream queen,” he said. “When I spoke with Madelaine I just knew that she was an exceptional person, exceptional actor, and that's what it took to play this part. In the same way, after looking long and hard, we found Froy Gutierrez, who is another wonderful young actor. We wanted a couple who feel natural and relaxed together. Their relationship, maybe it's not identical to the relationship in the original film, but it's something that feels very natural and very real, and that to me was the key to this movie and this trilogy. It's the realism.”

The filmmaker, who also helmed films like Deep Blue Sea and Die Hard 2, said that shooting all three films back to back was “the challenge of a lifetime.”

“On a Monday morning, I could be shooting the second chapter, and Monday afternoon I could be shooting the first chapter, and Tuesday morning I could be shooting the third chapter,” he told EW. “It was incredibly demanding for the actors, for the continuity in terms of the make-up and wardrobe, and for my director of photography, because we wanted to create a visual language that develops so that the movies get bigger, more epic, as we go [on]. It just kept all of our juices pumping all the time."

Petsch recently reflected on the end of Riverdale during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show. “You go through all the stages of grief saying goodbye to a chapter in my entire twenties,” she said. “I mean, like I worked with Luke Perry who taught me how to conduct myself on a set properly. You go through so much life in, especially from 21 to 28. It's such formative years. So it's been tough, but I'm still in touch with all of my costars and we talk every day."
