‘Riverdale’ Showrunner Reveals ‘Flowers in the Attic’ Inspiration for Jason and Cheryl’s Relationship

No, it’s not just you, there is definitely something up with the Blossom twins on “Riverdale,” and on Thursday night’s episode, Cheryl Blossom was finally confronted with it, head on.

During a game of “sin or secret,” brought up by Cheryl (Madeline Petsch) herself at a party at Archie’s (KJ Apa) house, Veronica (Camila Mendes) turned the tables on the grieving, surviving Blossom twin by speculating maybe she killed Jason herself.

It’s quite a bombshell accusation and Cheryl has no response, but the expression on her face wasn’t exactly shock and disgust.

“I love that Veronica says what everyone’s thinking but is too afraid to say,” showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told reporters after a screening of the episode.

So no, fans have not been simply reading too much into things when it comes to the Blossom twins.

“Definitely not,” Aguirre-Sacasa said. “It feels like from the first time [in the pilot] that they appeared in that red car car with the matching outfits, holding hands, we were going for that.”

Aguirre-Sacasa also revealed the inspiration behind the twisted Blossom clan.

“Growing up, one of the books I loved was ‘Flowers in the Attic,'” he said, referring to the VC Andrews novel which depicted an incestuous relationship between siblings. “That was how I always thought of the Blossoms… As I was working on the ‘Riverdale’ pilot, it was around that time that Lifetime did their must-see ‘Flowers in the Attic’ remake… I had also worked on the characters on Archie [the comics] and definitely played all that up.

“All I can say is, there’s still more incestuous stuff to come,” he concluded.

“Riverdale” airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
