‘River Monsters’ Sneak Peek: Surrounded by Oceanic White Tips
Extreme angler and biologist Jeremy Wade is bidding farewell to Animal Planet’s River Monsters, but if Sunday’s ninth and final season premiere is any indication, he has been saving the best for last.
The two-hour episode, “Killers From the Abyss,” finds Wade investigating the fates of the passengers who did not survive the 1942 nighttime sinking of the RMS Laconia, which was torpedoed in the mid-Atlantic. It’s the biggest, most complex mystery of his career: Eyewitness accounts don’t place sharks at the scene until the following day, when, as one survivor tells him directly, the water was already pink with blood. So what kind of predator was first to the scene, and what creatures created the various kind of bite marks and attack scenarios described in the reports?
Before all is said and done, Wade determines five different predators that joined the feeding frenzy. In our exclusive sneak peek above, he travels to the Bahamas with a kayak and underwater speaker to test a theory that oceanic white-tip sharks were drawn from a great distance by the booming sound of the ship’s two boilers exploding in the water.
It’s only the second most tense sequence in the episode. To uncover whether one particular kind of shark, a leviathan of the deep, was likely involved, he heads 2,000 feet below the surface in the remote waters off of Ascension Island in a two-man submarine … with the carcass of a dead pig attached to the front of it. Pork is apparently the closest to human flesh, and he needs to determine if this species has a taste for it. It’s as eerie, dangerous, and fascinating as anything you’ve seen on Shark Week.
The final season of River Monsters premieres April 23 at 9 p.m. on Animal Planet.
