Spoilers ahead for season one of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

Prime Video has already guaranteed five seasons of The Rings of Power. The J.R.R. Tolkien estate only let Prime purchase the rights to adapt the prequel to Lord of the Rings if they committed to doing five seasons (or 50 hours). "There are things in the first season that don’t pay off until season five. We even know what our final shot of the last episode is going to be," co-showrunner J.D. Payne said. So, with that said, season two is already guaranteed.

Here's everything we know about the second chapter of the most expensive television show ever made, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

Season one focused on Galadriel's story, and now season two will center on Sauron.

The season one finale revealed Halbrand was Sauron. "I hope after the last episode airs, viewers watch the whole season again, which is now a different experience," co-showrunner Patrick McKay said. "We hope that, as we get into season two, it makes people like season one even better because you’re seeing it through a new prism."

"Sauron can now just be Sauron," McKay continued. "Like Tony Soprano or Walter White. He’s evil, but complexly evil. We felt like if we did that in season one, he’d overshadow everything else. So the first season is like Batman Begins, and the The Dark Knight is the next movie, with Sauron maneuvering out in the open. We’re really excited. Season two has a canonical story. There may well be viewers who are like, ‘This is the story we were hoping to get in season one!’ In season two, we’re giving it to them."

New cast members are joining for season two.

The entire main cast of Rings of Power is expected to return, along with new cast members in as-yet-unspecified roles: Ciarán Hinds, Tanya Moodie, Rory Kinnear, Gabriel Akuwudike, Yasen 'Zates' Atour, Ben Daniels, Amelia Kenworthy, Nia Towle, Nicholas Woodeson, Oliver Alvin-Wilson, Stuart Bowman, Gavi Singh Chera, William Chubb, Kevin Eldon, Will Keen, Selina Lo, and Calam Lynch.

Tom Bombadil will appear in season 2.

Tom Bombadil, a fan-favorite character, will feature in The Rings of Power season 2, played by Rory Kinnear. "There’s a reason why he hasn’t been in prior adaptations, because in some ways he’s sort of an anti-dramatic character," Payne tells Vanity Fair. "He’s not a character who has a particularly strong agenda. He observes drama, but largely doesn’t participate in it. In The Fellowship of the Ring, the characters kind of just go there and hang out for a while, and Tom drops some knowledge on them."

He adds, "He can be a force for good, but he is challenging to integrate dramatically in that he doesn't have an agenda. He’s not driving forward and pushing people to arrive at any particular end."

The second season mainly be filmed in the UK.

The first season shot in New Zealand during the pandemic, but season two production centered on the UK—where Prime Video "is establishing a multishow hub," per the Hollywood Reporter. Production began in early October 2022, and wrapped in June 2023.

The second season of Rings of Power will premiere on August 29.

The official description is as follows: "In Season Two of The Rings of Power, Sauron has returned. Cast out by Galadriel, without army or ally, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will. Building on Season One’s epic scope and ambition, the new season plunges even its most beloved and vulnerable characters into a rising tide of darkness, challenging each to find their place in a world that is increasingly on the brink of calamity. Elves and dwarves, orcs and men, wizards and Harfoots… as friendships are strained and kingdoms begin to fracture, the forces of good will struggle ever more valiantly to hold on to what matters to them most of all… each other."

While we wait, catch up on all of season one on Prime Video.
