Though it started off as a plot device in the first season of HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones, the song “Misbehavin’” became a near-immediate real-world sensation after it aired in mid-September. And now, it’s on streaming services. Take a listen below.
Danny McBride created, writes, and stars in The Righteous Gemstones, which follows a comically beleaguered Christian megachurch family in South Carolina. Within the Gemstones universe, “Misbehavin’” is a wholesome childhood hit by the Christian singing-and-clogging duo of Aimee-Leigh and Baby Billy Freeman. In the show’s present day, Uncle Baby Billy is trying to reclaim his glory days in the spotlight following the death of his sister. Both the “original” kiddie version and a later-day “reunion” performance are now streaming.
In reality, McBride and Edi Patterson (who plays Judy Gemstone) wrote the song together with composer Joseph Stephens. Country star Jennifer Nettles sings “Misbehavin’” in character as Aimee-Leigh, joined by Walton Goggins as Baby Billy for the song’s “reunion” edition. The Righteous Gemstones was renewed for a second season in early September.
