Rickie Fowler withdraws from PGA Tour playoffs opener with injury

Rickie Fowler began the PGA Championship’s final round two shots off of the lead. Throughout Sunday, though, he struggled and was unable to muster a charge, finishing in a tie for 12th.

On Wednesday, a major reason as to why Fowler struggled became clear when he posted on Instagram: Fowler has a partial tear in his right oblique. Due to the injury, he withdrew from next week’s Northern Trust Open, which is the first leg of the PGA Tour’s playoffs.

“My team and I feel like it’s best not to play next week in the Northern Trust,” Fowler wrote. “I will be back healthy and competitive ASAP for the FedEx Cup and more than ready for the Ryder Cup!!

Fowler is a lock to play in the Ryder Cup that begins Sept. 27 in France. He earned one of the eight automatic spots.

Health permitting, Fowler could tee it up next at the Dell Technologies Championship, which begins Aug. 31 at TPC Boston.
