Rick Ross and Meek Mill have opened up about their respective struggles with substance abuse and how they leaned on one another to kick the habit.

During a conversation with Ebro Darden on Apple Music’s Rap Life, the rap stars and collaborators revealed how they encouraged the other to battle their addictions in recent years. As the elder of the two, Ross spoke on choosing to lead by example due to his own experiences with drug abuse, which led to the Miami native enduring medical complications of his own.

“That being little bro, it could be something that you walk into the studio, you walk into your homie and you see your homie not all the way on his A game,” the MMG boss explained. “That’s one of the things that me and Meek most definitely had conversations about — vice versa, though.”

He continued, touching on the side effects his usage of codeine had on his health. “Me drinking lean at a time and now, I’m taking medication two times a day because of this. And then you walk into a session, you see your little bro, ‘Aye man, we gotta tighten up on this sh*t.’ It’s a lot of different ways we can have issues, or back and forth, but we always got the money.”

Meek, who has been forthcoming about his bout with using prescription medication throughout his career, recalls his decision to stop drinking “lean” in 2019 upon his release from prison and experiencing withdrawal as a result. “My stomach was bent over for like a year-and-a-half,” the Philly native shared. “I came home, 2019, I couldn’t smoke weed or really drink liquor like that. Before 2019, I was off the lean and all that. I changed my lifestyle — well, I thought I changed.”

The 36-year-old says that he began increasing his consumption of alcohol, but admits that drinking only worsened his condition, physically. “Tried to change over to the liquor every day ’cause I’m being on tour, after-party. That sh*t kinda ruined my stomach so I had to sit down for a minute, let my sh*t build up.”

He continued, adding “That was another human trial that we go through on the inside and then it’s like, ‘Yo, when you dropping?’ I’m telling my own family, ‘Yo, my stomach f**ked up. I weight 170. I’m hit right now!’ But people wasn’t seeing it, though. People will see it or might make a joke about it, but in real life like, yo, my sh*t f**ked up.”

Rick Ross and Meek Mill recently released their latest collaboration “SHAQ & KOBE,” which finds the tandem teaming up for a triumphant anthem likening their chemistry and winning streak to that of NBA stars Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant during the early ’00s.
