How 'Everybody Wants Some!!' Recreated the Magical Experience of Hearing 'Rapper's Delight' for the First Time

The new movie from director Richard Linklater, Everybody Wants Some!!, has been dubbed a “spiritual sequel” to the 1993 cult classic, Dazed and Confused. The new movie takes place about four years after Dazed — set in 1976 — making Everybody Wants Some a 1980s period piece.

“The magic of making movies, sometimes, when you’re making a period film, is trying to get those details exactly right. It’s the music, it’s the cars, it’s the clothes, it’s the facial hair,” Linklater told Yahoo Movies.

Music, specifically, has a strong presence in Everybody Wants Some!!, including an extended scene featuring the 1979 Sugarhill Gang classic, “Rapper’s Delight.”

“I was just trying to show what that felt like when it was, like, new,” Linklater said. “It was so new, it was just what it was like to be young when that first hit you. I don’t think anyone young could kind of understand what that felt like. If it’s been there your whole life you just think it’s always been there. But there was that transition moment, where it’s like, ‘Oh, what is this?’”
