Ric Ransom takes over leadership of University of Missouri Health Care on May 1 as chief executive officer, after serving as vice president for University of Wisconsin Hospitals since 2018.

The decision was made by Mun Choi, University of Missouri System president and MU chancellor.

Previous CEO Jonathan Curtright left in July 2022. Nim Chinniah has served as interim CEO since that time.

“We are excited to have Ric lead our MU Health Care team as we continue to achieve excellence in clinical care,” Choi said in a news release. “I look forward to working with him and the entire team at MU Health Care to achieve our important mission of saving and improving lives of Missourians.”

Ransom will take over at a critical time for MU Health Care, where spending now is outpacing revenue, while officials say its financial health is stable.

Ransom's responsibilities at the University of Wisconsin included providing direction for the University Hospital, American Family Children's Hospital and UW Health at The American Center.

Before his time in Wisconsin, Ransom's positions included chief operating officer of Greenville Memorial Hospital in South Carolina, with 14,000 employees. He also had positions in Memphis, Atlanta, Boston and Dallas.

He has master's degrees from the University of Alabama and a law degree from Cumberland School of Law in Birmingham, Ala.

Ransom said he's ready.

“I am excited to join the team at MU Health Care,” Ransom said in the news release. “The health system is on a strong growth trajectory and I look forward to maintaining this momentum as we prepare to open a new Children’s Hospital and continue saving and improving lives across the state.”

Ransom is a good choice, said Richard Barohn, MU executive vice chancellor for health affairs.

“I am thrilled with the leadership team we have in place and where we’re headed as an integrated academic health system,” Barohn said in the release. “I am confident Ric will help us move the system forward as we continue to grow.”
