Season 2 of Reyka, the South African crime thriller starring Kim Engelbrecht (The Flash, Dominion) in the title role, will stream for U.S. audiences beginning Thursday, Jan. 4, 2024, on BritBox.

Reyka Season 1 (currently available on BritBox) followed the flawed but brilliant criminal profiler, Dr. Reyka Gama, as she investigated a string of brutal murders committed by a serial killer in the sugar cane fields of KwaZulu-Natal.

Having been abducted as a child by a farmer named Speelman (Game of Thrones‘ Iain Glen), Reyka is traumatized by the experience though it also helps her enter the minds of Africa’s most notorious criminals. Manipulative and charming, Speelman’s hold on Reyka, 20 years later, forms part of the backbone of the story, as does Reyka’s relationship with her mother Elsa, played by Anna-Mart van der Merwe.

“Reyka exposes the secrets and lies, truth and trust, damage, healing and forgiveness,” says the official series synopsis. “With a dramatic backdrop of sugar cane fields, tropical beaches, stifling heat, dangerous wildlife, a criminal underworld, and shadowy politics – each place is connected by sugar but divided in so many other ways.”

For her Season 1 run as Reyka, Engelbrecht — well remembered by Flash fans for her Season 4 role as Marlize DeVoe aka the Thinker’s “mechanic” — was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress at the 2022 International Emmy Awards, and was named Best Actress in a TV Drama at the 2022 South African Film & Television Awards.
