In July 2023, authorities arrested 59-year-old Rex Heuermann from Long Island in connection with a series of killings known as the Gilgo Beach murders. Authorities took Heuermann into custody near his office on Fifth Avenue in New York City. He reportedly worked as a community member as an architect.

Heuermann is charged with three first-degree and three second-degree murders related to Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, and Amber Costello. According to prosecutors, the accuser deceived victims by posing as a photographer or offering them rides, subsequently strangling them and abandoning their bodies along Gilgo Beach.

Police were able to arrest Heuermann after obtaining a DNA sample by swabbing a leftover pizza crust from a discarded pizza box. The DNA test results, which further solidified the connection between Heuermann and the Gilgo Beach murder victims, confirmed a high degree of accuracy.

What was Rex Heuermann’s profession?

Rex Heuermann was a resident of Massapequa Park, a village in Nassau County. His neighbors described him as a well-dressed man who commuted to work in Manhattan as an architect. According to the neighbors, Heuermann has a wife, Asa Ellerup, and two children.
