Emma Stone could be on the verge of nabbing her fourth acting Oscar nomination for the upcoming dark comedy fantasy film “Poor Things,” directed by Oscar nominee Yorgos Lanthimos. This will be her second collaboration with the director after receiving her latest bid for her first run with him in “The Favourite.” With this pair working once again on Searchlight Pictures’ “Poor Things,” set to make its theatrical debut December 8, let’s take a closer look at Stone’s three previous Oscar nominations that she received in just five years.

Her first recognition came for the Best Picture-winning film “Birdman” (2014), where Stone portrayed the rebellious daughter of a dwindling Hollywood actor, known for playing a superhero, trying to rebuild his career with a Broadway play. Stone has some major standout moments, including an impassioned monologue where she talks to her father about his fear of not being relevant. Along with the Academy Award, her performance earned her nominations for a Golden Globe, Critics Choice, Screen Actors Guild and BAFTA Awards for Best Supporting Actress. “Birdman” won four Oscars that night: Best Cinematography plus three for Alejandro G. Iñárritu in Best Original Screenplay, Best Director and Best Picture, the last two categories in a tight race with Richard Linklater’s “Boyhood” throughout the awards season. Stone lost Best Supporting Actress to Patricia Arquette (“Birdman”), who cleaned up at awards shows that year.

Two years later, Stone’s second attempt at the Oscar would prove successful. Starring alongside Ryan Gosling in Damien Chazelle’s romantic musical “La La Land” (2016), she plays a struggling actress who gets romantically involved with a jazz pianist. At the beginning of the season, many believed Natalie Portman would win her second Oscar for her role as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in the biopic “Jackie,” after having bested Stone at the Critics Choice Awards. But Stone would later prevail at the Golden Globes as part of the “La La Land” sweep, and then later at SAG and BAFTA, leading to her first Oscar triumph in Best Actress. “La La Land” won an additional five awards (Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Score and Best Song) of its record-tying lead of 14 nominations.

And following the two-year pattern, Stone returned with her first time with Lanthimos in the historical black comedy “The Favourite” (2018), where she plays Abigail Masham, who competes with her cousin Lady Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz) for the attention of Queen Anne (Olivia Colman). Similar to their characters in the film, Stone battled head-to-head with Weisz for Best Supporting Actress across all the major award ceremonies, where they were both recognized, with Weisz triumphing at BAFTA. “The Favourite” went on to receive the most Oscar nominations of that year, tying Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma” with 10; it won Best Actress for Colman. Regina King (“If Beale Street Could Talk”) ended up claiming the Best Supporting Actress trophy, besting Stone in this race.

Now Stone and Lanthimos are hoping to strike gold twice with their partnership in “Poor Things,” about a Victorian woman who runs off with a lawyer, determined to lead a carefree, liberating life and discover the world around her after being resurrected from the dead. In addition to starring, Stone will also serve as a producer of the steampunk movie alongside Lanthimos. “Poor Things” has already received rave reviews, winning the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival back in September and Stone receiving high praise, with some calling it the best performance of her career. David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter says Stone “gorges on it in a fearless performance,” while Guy Lodge of Variety declares the film is rooted on her “single astonishing performance.”

Stone’s Oscar nominations have all come with movies that have done very well with the academy, and “Poor Things” looks to be no exception with its large crafts and prestige names and Oscar nominees like Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, writer Tony McNamara, cinematographer Robbie Ryan and editor Yorgos Mavropsaridis. With already hardware under its belt, the film will be a major contender at the Oscars and Stone may go along for the ride, seeking her second win.
