Review: American, Tex-Mex brunch restaurant in Vero Beach serves omelets to burritos

Here is the scenario: You are in a restaurant having an absorbing conversation with friends. The food arrives. Everyone takes a cursory glance at their plates, picks up their forks, and continues the discussion.

Suddenly, there is silence. Everyone looks at each other at the same moment and, with a full mouth, someone whispers, “This is really, really good!” All concur, abandoning the earlier conversation, and instead excitedly sharing details and accolades about the food on their plates.

That was our recent experience at the new Waterfall Restaurant, a breakfast and lunch eatery on 14th Avenue in Vero Beach.

Sitting back off the avenue with parking in front, Waterfall Restaurant and its eye-catching turquoise exterior is located in the building of the former Blue Star Brasserie. The interior has been brightened and decorated in gallery fashion with Florida Highwaymen paintings that are offered for sale. Staff greetings are sunny and cheerful at this family-owned and run business.

Brunch was a delight. Having already consumed enough hot coffee for the day, we all ordered cold drinks. Two guests automatically ordered unsweetened iced tea, but two of us splurged and had the delicious creamy, sweet Thai iced tea, a refreshing choice on a hot day.

Our friend, who honestly can be just a little bit of a picky eater, was the first to exclaim about the outstanding choice he had made with the golden burrito ($8.99). Peppers and onions were sauteed and added, along with tomatoes and bacon, to two eggs and finished. Topped with melted mozzarella cheese, this yummy concoction was placed onto a large flour tortilla, rolled tightly and cut into two large portions. With the expertly seasoned home fries gracing the plate, our friend solemnly declared this was a brunch for which he would definitely come back!

Although not quite as exuberant, his lovely wife said her Belgian waffle ($6.99) was one of the fluffiest waffles she had eaten anywhere. She enjoyed it with a side of crispy bacon ($4.50).

My husband, who often gets teased for eating so slowly and not finishing his brunch, kept up with the rest of us as he consumed every last bite of his Western omelet ($9.99) filled with diced ham, bell peppers, onions and American cheese. It came with a choice of grits, hash browns, home fries, or tater tots and toast or a biscuit.

I will share with you that Waterfall biscuits are everything a biscuit should be! I had a flaky, tasty, perfect biscuit with gravy ($4.50). Lots of spicy, but not-too-spicy sausage, is the main ingredient in this amazing gravy. I also had a side of corned beef hash ($5.25) that was quite good.

There are many very good breakfast/lunch restaurants in our area that I have written about here, but my opinion is that Waterfall might easily be one of the favorites.
