Rev Run shares the secret to a strong marriage in new book

“Love is not so much about looking in each other’s eyes, it’s looking in the same direction.” This was just some of the advice Joseph “Rev Run” Simmons had to share when he came in recently to discuss his brand new book, Old School Love: And Why It Works.

The book, which he wrote with his wife Justine Simmons, is meant to serve as a self-help guide for those who need some guidance in the relationship department. The couple set out to move and inspire people while sharing advice from lessons learned in their decades-long relationship.

Rev Run gave us a taste of some of what he has to offer with wisdom about what is required in a successful relationship. “You can’t hope to stay in love. You have to work to be in love. Relationships take work. You have to work at being self-less instead of selfish.”

Love is not always easy and no one knows that better than Justine and Joseph Simmons. Their love goes way back to a time before Run DMC’s hit “Walk This Way” changed the face of music forever.

The two met in their youth when Joseph was a teenager from Queens, New York, DJ-ing for hip-hop acts in the local scene. And when Justine saw him, it was love at first sight, but the timing just wasn’t right.

However, years down the road, the star-crossed lovers reconnected and picked up right where they left off, finally tying the knot in 1994.

Now, 25 years down the road, they want to share the wisdom they’ve accumulated about how to build a strong relationship and work on your love. The book is full of useful nuggets of advice, anecdotes about their love and charming poems that they’ve written for each other.
