The Results Are In: Billie Eilish Tops Album Sales Lists In 2019

Back in the day, it was easy to figure out who had been the year's top musician. Record sales told the story and there was really no debate over who had sold more records. In today's world album sales have hit a record low point. Therefore we need to come up with different metrics to be able to determine the singer who really blew everyone away this year. Thankfully Rolling Stone Magazine has taken it upon themselves to get that done. Last year the undeniable winner was Billie Eilish!

How The Metrics Work

Apparently this is the first year that Rolling Stone uses these metrics to decide who will top their Top 200 album chart. This is a chart that is going to monitor total album sales in the United States only. It contemplates a combination of factors. Which include total vinyl album sales, digital downloads, and music streaming services. It does not include radio air time.

That being said the singer did outlast seasoned veterans like Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, and Malone who all put up some very decent numbers on the year with their albums

What This Means For The Music Industry Moving Forward

It was a great year for Billie Eilish it is by no means often that we see a debut album with these types of results. Especially with the way that the music industry runs these days. The album titled, "When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?" was pretty much self-published. It was an album created by Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas straight out of their family home. In this day and age, anyone can produce homegrown content and get it out the masses. This is something the news industry has learned the hard way.

Of course, to be fair the Billie Eilish story is nothing like a Justin Beiber or anyone who was discovered on Youtube. Being born and bred into a family of musicians is obviously going to help your chances of being able to put your content out in front of the right people. There is no question about that. Not every house out in Highland Park has a music studio for 18-year-olds to produce their own music on. Yet, this may turn out to be quite a game-changer.

The Return of Pop Music

Oddly enough along with Billie Eilish 2019 saw the return of pop singers to the top of the charts. It was certainly a genre that had taken a hit in the last couple of years. It is actually the leading genre in physical album sales. With the top ten list of physical albums sold including the likes of The Jonas Brothers, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish and quite a few more. It is going to be interesting to see if the trend continues into the new decade.
