Restaurant that turned away Sarah Huckabee Sanders bombarded with bad reviews

A restaurant that refused to serve White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders has been bombarded by bad online reviews from Donald Trump supporters.

The Red Hen in Lexington, Virginia, has been in the spotlight since its owner, Stephanie Wilkinson, told Ms Sanders to leave the establishment because she works for an “inhumane and unethical” administration.

Her decision prompted a backlash online from fans of the president, who have taken to review sites such as Yelp to post damning, one-star reviews of the restaurant.

“I ate there a few weeks back. I would have never have ate there had I known they were such un-American hateful bigots,” said one user of the site. “They are the worst of America. Press Secretary Sanders handled herself with dignity and class.”

Another reviewer wrote: “Fit for a Nazi, this restaurant is perfect for serving hatred and bitter spirits to its liberal customers."

The onslaught then prompted others to weigh in, praising the actions of the restaurant’s owner.

“This is an establishment with morals and conviction who care about standing up for justice,” said one supporter: “You should be proud to eat here”.

Another wrote: “Under any normal circumstances I would not be supportive of a restaurant asking a customer to leave simply because of differing political beliefs.

"But Sarah's willingness, as a public official of our current administration, who is supposed to answer directly to the American people, to stand up in front every one of us and blatantly lie in repeated attempts to defend the completely indefensible actions of this corrupt and --even evil--POTUS is an embarrassment to the entire country.”

The owners of another restaurant in New Jersey, also named the Red Hen, also said it had received more than 600 angry phone calls and negative reviews from members of the public.

As a result, they said they had been forced into issuing a statement declaring its lack of affiliation with the Virginia eatery.

Senior Trump administration officials have been facing backlash in recent weeks for the president's “zero tolerance” policy towards illegal immigration, which has seen more than 2,300 children separated from their parents at the US-Mexico border.

Homeland security secretary Kirstjen Nielsen was booed out of a Mexican restaurant in Washington by protesters last week over the separation policy.

Stephen Miller, a senior advisor to the president and one of the architects of the immigration crackdown, faced a similar fate at a Mexican restaurant in the city’s Shaw neighbourhood.

Mr Trump has been forced to backtrack on the controversial immigration policy after it sparked widespread condemnation from across the world.
