Southern Living names iconic West Palm Beach steakhouse among South’s most ‘legendary’
One West Palm Beach steakhouse brand can’t stop making headlines. Its family of restaurants continues to expand with new concepts that go from fine-dining to backyard barbecue. And this week, the iconic Okeechobee Steakhouse earned national acclaim.
The West Palm Beach classic was named one of the 30 “most legendary steakhouses” in the South by Southern Living magazine. Founded in 1947, Okeechobee Steakhouse landed at No. 23 on the list, which features a casual-to-fancy range of nostalgia-evoking favorites.
“Now run by third-generation owners, the family business is more successful than ever,” writes the magazine’s travel and culture editor, Tara Massouleh McCay, in the story.
The success comes as no surprise to those of us who have dined at Okeechobee Steakhouse and followed its growth through the years. We have our reasons and memories for admiring the restaurant that’s considered to be the oldest steakhouse in Florida: the benchmark service, the dry-aged, hand-cut steak, the cozy feel of an old-school leather booth, the happy-hour filet sliders, the annual birthday-steak freebee.
The reasons I outlined in this 2014 dining review still ring true to me today.
