New restaurants are popping up all over Northeast Ohio this winter, but things are getting particularly sticky in Cuyahoga Falls thanks to the opening of one eatery — Ryes and Shine.

Front Street has seen a boom in pedestrian traffic and business growth since the city reopened it to motorists in 2018. So it's no surprise that Ryes and Shine is located on the main thoroughfare, just east of state Route 8.

Whether residents are looking for good brunch, bourbon or vegan fare, they'll find it all — and a heck of a lot more — on the robust menu of the city's newest eatery.

Sit down, strap in and don't let your inner-foodie get overwhelmed. Here's the run down of what Ryes and Shine offers and what to try when you visit.

On the Ryes and Shine menu

The new all-day breakfast bar in town has got quite the collection of bourbon.

If patrons need more options, Ryes and Shine also serves a solid meatloaf and Rueben after 11 a.m.

Another bonus is Rachel Jernigan, who is serving as the eatery’s general manager, brings about 30 years of bartending experience to the table. Her house-made Bloody Mary mix, as well as a collection of mocktails, have a place on Ryes and Shine’s drink menu.

If drinking isn't your thing, you can choose from one of a handful of non-alcoholic mixed drinks like The Derby, a combination of fresh brewed iced tea, fresh lemon juice and peach puree at Ryes and Shine breakfast bar in Cuyahoga Falls.

The long-awaited restaurant officially opened Nov. 17 and can fit 71 guests between its bar, side room and dining room. Tacked on its warm brown walls is artwork by artist Zach Batey and two large chalk boards displaying the day’s desserts.

Classic breakfast items, such as sausage gravy and biscuits and chicken and waffles, are fan favorites. Other notable, sweeter plates include peanut butter and jelly French toast and bourbon bananas French toast.

How Ryes and Shine came to be

Owners Laura and Michael Grguric sold all their veterinary offices in 2020 — aside from Cuyahoga Valley Veterinary Clinic in Richfield — to fund their new mission: revamping local businesses while empowering women.

Laura was a year ahead of Jernigan when the two attended Stow High School, so they knew of each other but were not especially close. They reconnected decades later when Laura reached out to Jernigan, who had just started her cat rescue called Tree City Cats, about helping her open a cat café.

The café idea was too complicated to execute quickly, so when Jernigan found out Laura and her husband were opening Ryes and Shine she asked to manage it.

“I love breakfast and for my family, being vegetarian and vegan, we know that everyone can eat something at breakfast,” said Laura. “So, if someone wants to have bourbon with their breakfast at 9 p.m., they're going to be able to do that. Or if they want to have a mimosa, on Sunday we offer mimosa flights with their breakfast. I wanted to kind of tap into something that really hasn't been done necessarily around here.”

More businesses coming to Cuyahoga Falls

So far, the Grgurics have opened Clutch Lanes (previously Legend Lanes), Doodle Drive In (once Retro Dog) and, most recently, Ryes and Shine (formerly The Silver Swan).

Their other businesses set to launch on Front Street are Glazed, a doughnut shop, and a roller rink where Mr. Fun’s Costumes currently resides. Customers may be able to get gluten-free doughnuts from Glazed as early as January, while the roller rink will still take a year or two to open, said Laura.

A future partnership with Glazed may even bring doughnut burgers to Ryes and Shine’s menu, according to Jernigan.
