New restaurant: City's only bagel shop has salad, sandwich, baked goods menu and pretzels

A father and daughter, who didn’t know the other existed until last year, have opened a bagel shop in Fort Pierce.

Treasure Coast Bagel Bakery opened Oct. 13 in the Linkside Shoppes plaza, across from Aldi and Indian Hills Golf Course, in between Workout Anytime and West Marine. It serves breakfast and lunch.

Some national chains and locally owned restaurants and doughnut shops in Fort Pierce have bagels on their menus, but the new bakery appears to be the city’s only bagel shop.

Co-owner Carmine Barbaro, 66, was in the bagel business for 25 years, owning shops in New York, New Jersey and North Carolina. He had just sold his last bagel shop to retire and move to Florida in December when he discovered he had a daughter, Ali Greene, 41.

“I found him in 2022 when I randomly decided to do a DNA test, thinking on the off chance I could find my parents,” Greene said.

She matched with her first cousin on her dad’s side of the family, who had four uncles. The only one who didn't have children was Carmine Barbaro.

“He ended up doing a DNA test through Ancestry and matched as my father,” Greene said.

Both are originally from New York and moved to Florida last year, along with Greene’s 14-year-old daughter.

“I didn’t know what I wanted to do for work,” Greene said. “So my dad offered to build me a bagel store and teach me to do what he did for 25 years.”

“He is just now teaching me everything he knows, passing on the torch so to speak,” Greene said.

Since she’s the 13th first cousin in her dad’s family — and Barbaro’s lucky number is 13, which he has tattooed on his arm — they decided to open on Friday the 13th.
