The Resident has, tragically, been without a pulse for months, ever since Fox cancelled the series in April after its sixth season concluded.

“It was a great run,” series co-creator Amy Holden Jones said after the plug was officially pulled. “Today is a day of gratitude for our amazing cast and crew and the life altering experience we shared.”

As far as unplanned series finales go, The Resident‘s Season 6 ender was a decent one: Conrad and Billie said they loved each other. Devon and Leela got engaged. Gov. Betz helped the hospital avoid financial ruin. Happy endings abounded, if we’re honest!

And yet, we were left wanting more. Although The Resident‘s writers did an excellent job bracing fans for cancellation, offering enough creative closure to soften the blow of the show’s axing, there was still ample opportunity for storytelling in a potential seventh season — and we know what we would have liked to see, should the show have been resuscitated.

Read on for our full Resident Season 7 wish list, then hit the comments with your own contributions! (Then check out what we wish we’d gotten to see on Fox’s Pitch and NBC’s Hannibal, too.)

Billie and Conrad, Sittin’ in a Tree…

When The Resident wrapped up, Conrad was visibly the happiest he’d been since before Nic passed away, having found new love with Billie Sutton. But surely TV’s most satisfying romances don’t end when they exchange “I love you”s for the first time, as Conrad and Billie’s would have, right? It’s certainly nice to know that when the show ended, this couple was content. Still, we wanted to see them revel in their nascent relationship, and fumble through fresh mistakes, and move in together, and maybe even give Gigi a sibling… or at least add some more chickens to Conrad’s coop. (For those unfamiliar with the show: That’s not a figure of speech! We mean actual chickens!)

Devon and Leela Say ‘I Do’

Speaking of romantic milestones we missed out on, we’re still disappointed to have been robbed of Devon and Leela’s wedding, especially when the pair spent a chunk of Season 6 forgetting they were made for each other. Plus, ever since we came thisclose to watching Devon and ex-fiancée Priya tie the knot in Season 2, we’d been waiting for The Resident to stage the gorgeous Indian nuptials that he and his eventual soulmate deserved.

That’s Professor Bell to You

Jones had previously hinted to TVLine that Dr. Bell would teach more in Season 7, given how his multiple sclerosis forced him out of the operating room. And even with his years of experience as a surgeon and mentor, we imagine it would have been a new, exciting and perhaps terrifying challenge for Bell to teach in a more properly academic setting. How dare Fox take Navigating-Life’s-Curveballs Bell away from us!

(Don’t tell anyone, but we’re going to sneak in a bonus wish here: Show us #KitBell’s marital bliss, dammit!)

The Doctor Stays In

Cardiologist James Yamada (played by Ian Anthony Dale) initially had one major job: Help Billie and Conrad realize their romantic feelings for each other. And he did that quite well! But as Season 6 continued, The Resident peeled back interesting layers of Yamada, including a sweet devotion to his ailing med school mentor, and an unexpected chemistry with Cade Sullivan. Had Season 7 come to fruition, we assume Dale might have been elevated to a series regular (“I adore this new lead and want to give him complexities,” Jones admitted), and it would have been a treat to get better acquainted with a new, prominent male character.

An Enraptured Raptor

Although AJ began co-parenting with Padma in Season 6, and helped her through a struggle with postpartum depression, Jones shared that a Padma/AJ romance “was not where we wanted to go” in a potential seventh season. And while it would have been perfectly lovely for AJ to fly solo for a while longer, and raise his twin boys without a love interest in the picture, we’d be lying if we said we weren’t eager for him to find a new romantic partner who challenged him (and made him swoon) like Mina did.

“Unfortunately, Mina’s quite difficult to replace, both for him emotionally and for me emotionally,” Jones told us with a laugh. And it’s true: Shaunette Renée Wilson’s character was one of a kind. But The Resident had a knack for filling the gaping holes left by exiting cast members, and we were anxious to see who would become the object of Raptor’s affection in Season 7 and beyond.
