People aren't the only species that crave a pumpkin spice latte, as the seasonal drink is a favorite among the residents of Chimp Haven in Louisiana.

The primates of the world's largest chimpanzee sanctuary have joined in on the fall fun and were recently treated to their own versions of pumpkin spice lattes — plus a pumpkin treat.

The chimp-friendly PSL was made of pumpkin spice non-caffeinated tea (PST) and served in recycled and personalized coffee cups.

"Fall traditions offer a great opportunity to spice things up," Rana Smith, Chimp Haven president and CEO, said in a press release. "Chimpanzees enjoy choice and variety just like people do, among their favorites this time of year are our own special 'lattes' served with a side of fresh pumpkin to provide an enriching experience that keeps their taste buds — and their minds — engaged."

Smith said efforts from the staff and supporters allow for "these special experiences and treats for the chimps, and the chimps dive right in," adding, "It's simply a joy to watch."

The chimps were treated to pumpkin beverages and served pumpkin pies and soups to celebrate fall and Halloween.

The chimp sanctuary opted for the edible pumpkins— rather than decorative jack-o-lanterns — so the primary could enjoy the gourds as an autumnal snack.

"Some chimps eat the pumpkins right up, biting their way through to the seeds, while others strut with their pumpkin on display, sometimes hanging from their mouth by its stem," Smith said. "Each chimpanzee's unique personality shines through."

The chimp sanctuary serves fresh produce to the chimpanzees twice daily, no matter the season. The residents'' daily meals include leafy greens, eggplants, bell peppers, broccoli, sweet potatoes, and various fruits.

The following year, Chimp Haven was the subject of the six-part Disney+ and National Geographic docuseries Meet the Chimps, which was released in 2020.

Throughout the series, the chimps are seen engaging in "food squabbles, alliances, romances, bromances, tears, tantrums, high jinxes, and heartbreaks," per the series' official synopsis. While the chimps remain the focal point, the series also highlights the people who help give these sanctuary chimps a second chance at a happy life.
