Reports: Saints trade Adrian Peterson to Cardinals

It’s been clear since Week 1 that the Adrian PetersonNew Orleans Saints marriage wasn’t going so well. Maybe Peterson’s new marriage will go a little better.

As first reported by ESPN’s Dianna Russini, the Saints have traded Peterson to the Arizona Cardinals for a conditional draft pick.

The Cardinals, sitting at 2-3 after losing in Philadelphia on Sunday, are desperate for running back help after losing David Johnson to a dislocated wrist against the Detroit Lions in the season opener. In five games, they’ve totaled just 259 rushing yards, last in the league, and haven’t gotten more than 83 yards as a team in any game.

Chris Johnson, 32, has spent parts of the last three seasons with Arizona, is the Cardinals’ leading rusher, but is averaging a paltry 2.5 yards per attempt.

Peterson, who is also 32, signed a two-year, $7 million deal with New Orleans in late April, after getting little interest on the free agent market. But in four games, he’s gotten just 27 carries (for 81 yards) as the Saints have used Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara, both more versatile backs, for more snaps.
