West Virginia could be without a key defensive contributor for the first few weeks of the season.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Bruce Feldman, WVU linebacker David Long could miss September because of a knee injury.

Long started at linebacker as a freshman in 2016 and had 65 tackles for the Mountaineers. He’s one of just three returning starters for the Mountaineers on defense, though all three were set to be at linebacker. Al-Rasheed Benton was the team’s second-leading tackler with 80 tackles and Kyzir White had 58 stops.

That returning starter tally doesn’t count defensive back Dravon Askew-Henry, who missed all of 2016 with a knee injury suffered in August. He’s back at full-strength and should start in the defensive backfield.

West Virginia opens the season against Virginia Tech at FedEx Field on Sept. 3. After playing the Hokies, WVU plays East Carolina and Delaware State before ending the month of September with a game vs. Kansas. If Long is out for the entirety of the month, his first game back could be Oct. 7 vs. TCU.
