Report: Werenski intends to sign with Blue Jackets before training camp
The clock is winding down before NHL training camps kick off, and there are still many high-end players without contracts for the upcoming season. Mitch Marner, Brayden Point, Mikko Rantanen, Patrik Laine, and Matthew Tkachuk remain unsigned, just to name a few.
However, Columbus Blue Jackets fans can rest assured that conversations with their restricted free agent, Zach Werenski, are going well enough to ease concerns.
"I have been in communication with the Blue Jackets throughout the summer," Werenski’s agent Pat Brisson told The Columbus Dispatch. "It's our intention to have an agreement in time for camp. I'm most certain we will be continuing our talks in the near future."
Werenski tallied 11 goals and 44 points in 2018-19, adding another six points in the playoffs. The defenceman was selected by the club eighth overall in the 2015 NHL Draft, and has since tallied 128 points in 237 games throughout his three-year, entry-level contract.
General manager Jarmo Kekalainen commented on the pending contract, giving Blue Jackets fans a bit more comfort.
“I'm not the least bit worried,” Kekalainen said. “He's a good player. We like him. We want to give him a fair contract and continue.”
