Tennessee RB John Kelly, LB Will Ignont suspended after drug citations
Two Tennessee players, running back John Kelly and linebacker Will Ignont, were cited on drug charges by Knoxville police after a traffic stop Tuesday night.
As a result, the two have been suspended for Saturday’s game against Kentucky.
“John Kelly and Will Ignont will be suspended for the Kentucky game as a result of the incident on Tuesday night,” UT head coach Butch Jones said in a statement. “Members of our football team have a responsibility to represent the University of Tennessee in a first-class manner. I met with John and Will and they understand their actions were unacceptable.”
According to WATE, a car driven by Kelly was pulled over after police noticed a headlight was out. After police approached the vehicle, they noted an odor and both players consented to a search.
A clear plastic bag of what appeared to be marijuana was found in the center console. KPD says there were 4.6 grams in the bag. Officers also found a glass pipe. According to the report, neither players claimed ownership of the bag and pipe.
Ignont was cited for drug paraphernalia possession while Kelly was cited for pot possession in addition to two traffic citations. The drug-related charges are misdemeanors.
Kelly is Tennessee’s best offensive player. He has 125 carries for 615 yards and six touchdowns and leads the team with 26 receptions. Ignont has three tackles this season.
The Vols are 3-4 on the year, including an 0-4 mark in SEC play.
