Report: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake Is No Longer in Development
The remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is reportedly no longer in active development.
Per Insider Gaming, gaming industry insider Jeff Grubb revealed a disappointing update regarding the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake during the latest episode of Giant Bomb’s Game Mess Mornings show.
“I just want to clear it up, this game is not being worked on right now,” Grubb said. “Just full-stop. This game is not being worked on in any way at any studio.”
Grubb later added, “I looked into it a little bit. I don’t think this is news to most of you, I think you guys can piece this together if you’ve been listening to this and Sony stepping away and scrubbing mentions of Knights of the Old Republic from social media and YouTube. I think you can put two-and-two together, there, but just to 100 percent confirm it, this game is not being worked on right now.”
What’s been happening with the Knights of the Old Republic remake?
Initially announced during a Sony PlayStation Showcase event in September 2021, the Knights of the Old Republic remake has had a troubled history. Development of the game was reportedly paused in 2022 after Aspyr’s demo of the Knights of the Old Republic remake “didn’t land as well as it could have when it was shown to Lucasfilm and Sony,” according to IGN.
The game’s art director Brad Prince and design director Jason Minor both left the project shortly after, while the remake then moved around to a number of different developers before landing at Saber Interactive. Aspyr and Saber Interactive are both owned by Embracer Group.
Per IGN, Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors opted not to say anything about the Knights of the Old Republic remake during a recent financial presentation. “I notice that anything I say to this becomes a headline, so that is my only comment,” he said when asked about the game.
