Report: LeBron James in talks with Paramount to produce and star in comedy film
It appears LeBron James is wasting no time in taking advantage of the perks of his landing spot with the Los Angeles Lakers.
SpringHill Entertainment, the four-time MVP’s production company, and writer Steve Mallory have sold an untitled comedy to Paramount Players, a division of Paramount Pictures, according to a report from Variety. The four-time MVP and his SpringHill partner Maverick Carter would reportedly produce the movie, which SpringHill has been developing with Mallory for several months.
LeBron James’ burgeoning film career
This would be James’ second major role in a film after his appearance in Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck in 2015, but there’s plenty of reason to believe that more roles could be coming soon. The Lakers’ proximity to Hollywood was widely seen as a major selling point to James during free agency, giving him the ability to simultaneously be a player in both the NBA and the film industry.
Even if some in Los Angeles haven’t been welcoming to James and some others have been arguably too welcoming, James is already taking a shine to Hollyood. Per another report from Variety, James is already a member of the Producer’s Guild of America thanks to his selling of the spec script “Hustle” to Legendary Entertainment and his production of a “House Party” reboot with New Line.
And of course, there remains the possibility that James will someday star in Space Jam 2.
What kind of movie is LeBron James making?
As far as what movie James is making, details are quite scarce. James being a possibility to star could be a clue, since you’d think his spectrum as an actor might be a bit limited given that he’s a 6-foot-8, 250-pount NBA superstar, but we don’t even know if the movie will be about basketball yet.
As for the writer Mallory, his two major writing credits center around work with actress Melissa McCarthy. The 50-year-old Mallory co-wrote “The Boss” in 2016 with McCarthy and he’s lined up to write another movie starring her titled “Superintelligence.”
