Report: Joe Flacco to miss 4-6 weeks with bulging disc in neck

Denver Broncos quarterback Joe Flacco might avoid going on injured reserve after all. After getting a second opinion, Flacco is expected to miss 4-6 weeks with a bulging disc in his neck, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The 34-year-old Flacco sustained the injury during the Broncos’ 15-13 loss to the Indianapolis Colts in Week 8. The team initially believed the injury was serious enough it was considering placing Flacco on injured reserve, which would have ended his season.

Flacco has already been ruled out for Week 9. With Flacco out, the Broncos will turn start Brandon Allen against the Cleveland Browns. The team also has rookie second-round pick Drew Lock, but he’s on injured reserve due to a thumb injury. Lock is close to returning, however.

While Flacco can return this season, his time as the team’s starter might be over. With the Broncos sitting at 2-6, the team will start playing for the future soon. That means Lock will likely get an opportunity once he’s healthy.

At that point, the team won’t have any motivation to turn back to Flacco.
