Report: HS football coach fired after players allegedly spike practice water with male enhancement drug
A Los Angeles high school football coach has been fired after an investigation into allegations that two students spiked water at a junior varsity football practice with a male enhancement drug, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Bernstein High School in Hollywood dismissed varsity football coach Luis Barajas on Aug. 7. An investigation found that he failed to inform officials or parents of the alleged July 12 drug spiking incident until two weeks after it occurred, according to the report.
School district: Parents not notified due to lack of evidence
Los Angeles Unified School District spokeswoman Barbara A. Jones told The Times that the district “did not find evidence that any student actually drank the contaminated water” when trying to explain why parents weren’t notified.
A statement provided by the school district in a report The Times uncovered through the Public Records act provided similar reasoning.
District: ‘No parent complaints’
“No parent complaints were received at Bernstein, school police [were] not involved, no testing of the alleged contaminated water took place and there [were] no student illness reports,” the statement reads.
Jones also told The Times that the water wasn’t tested because it was discarded before the allegation was reported.
Barajas was also cited for failing to secure a permit for practice and allowing students to practice before the school verified their academic eligibility.
