Report: Boxer Patrick Day in a coma following brutal knockout by Charles Conwell
Junior middleweight boxer Patrick Day is reportedly in a coma after being knocked out by Charles Conwell in a fight on Saturday night at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, according to ESPN.
Day and Conwell went 10 rounds, but Conwell dominated the fight. He landed significant blows in the fourth and eighth rounds that knocked Day down, but two rights and a left hook in the 10th knocked him out. As Day hit the canvas, his head bounced off the mat. According to DAZN, he was unconscious the moment he hit the ground.
Day required several minutes of medical attention in the ring, which caused the referee to call off the fight at 1 minute and 47 seconds into the round.
Day was fitted with a neck brace and oxygen mask before being taken out of the ring on a stretcher and rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. ESPN reported that Day was unconscious when he left the arena and remained unconscious throughout, suffering a seizure before he got to the hospital. He was reportedly given a breathing tube at the hospital, and at some point went into a coma.
While it’s unknown whether Day slipped into a coma on his own or if his doctors put him into it, a source close to the Day family told DAZN that Day was in a medically induced coma following surgery to reduce the swelling on his brain. Day is reportedly in the ICU.
Day, 27, is 17-4-1 with 6 KOs in his career. He was a 2012 Golden Gloves champion, the 2012 USA Boxing welterweight national champion, and also won the Sugar Ray Robinson Outstanding Athlete award in 2012 while also being an Olympic alternate. He had a six-fight winning streak snapped in June when he lost to Carlos Adames for the NABF super welterweight and WBO NABO super welterweight titles.
