Report: Big 12 conference set to welcome four new teams for the 2023-24 academic year
Unless you’re living under a rock, you’ve heard by now that the Big 12 conference is slated to welcome Cincinnati, Houston, BYU and UCF in the coming years.
The expansion came on the heels of Texas and Oklahoma announcing that they would depart the Big 12 to join the SEC. The two programs are contractually bind to the conference through 2025, leaving the door open for a potential 14-team model for a few years.
However, it’s been unclear when the Big 12 expansion would actually take place. On Wednesday, CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein reported that the Big 12 expansion will take place prior to the 2023-24 academic year.

The Longhorns appear to be financially ready to join the SEC, but are seemingly waiting for their counterparts, the Sooners, to get their buyout money together.
No matter what happens with Texas/Oklahoma, this upcoming season looks to be the Big 12’s last 10-team conference as we knew it.
