Rep. George Santos claims he’s working to improve public safety and decries aid to Uganda

Controversial Rep. George Santos said he’s fighting to improve public safety on Long Island and decried aid to the African nation of Uganda in a new round of seemingly scattershot Twitter salvos.

The embattled GOP lawmaker denounced what he called the rising number of burglaries in the village of Old Westbury, part of his NY-03 district.

“The taxpayers in #NY03 deserve public Saftey [sic] above all and I will fight to deliver it for them,” tweeted Santos.

Santos also blasted the U.S. for aiding Uganda to the tune of $950 million a year.

“I say NO MORE!” he tweeted Monday. “It’s time we focus on helping our people at home and stop funding evil regimes abroad.”

Santos didn’t explain why he singled out the east African nation for criticism. Uganda is an electoral democracy but is led by longtime President Yoweri Museveni, who is accused of using strong-arm tactics to stay in power.

It also recently enacted powerful anti-LGBTQ legislation, although homophobic laws are not particularly uncommon in Africa and worldwide.

Santos, 34, may be looking to shift discussion away from criticism of his own serial lies.

After winning an upset victory in the midterm elections, Santos was forced to admit that he fibbed about his education, work history and even supposed Jewish heritage.

He is also under investigation for fudging his campaign finance disclosures.

Santos has staunchly refused to resign his seat despite the demands of most of his GOP colleagues in the New York delegation that he step down.

He says he will run for reelection in 2024 but would likely face an uphill fight in both a Republican primary and a potential general election fight for the Democratic-leaning seat.
