‘Renegades’ Trailer: Navy SEALs Seek Nazi Gold in Luc Besson-Penned Thriller (Exclusive!)

Luc Besson returns to directing with next summer’s highly anticipated sci-fi opus Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. But that doesn’t mean he’s setting aside his other career as a writer and producer of lean, mean genre films. And now, in the spirit of his prior Taken, The Transporter, and Lucy, he’ll again deliver a slam-bang action spectacle with Renegades, a wartime heist film that Besson co-wrote and which features an Oscar winner who provides some barking-mad electricity.

In the exclusive new trailer for Renegades (viewable above), a team of Navy SEALs in 1995 Sarajevo find that their tank-driving shenanigans don’t sit too well with their mad-as-hell commanding officer, played by J.K. Simmons, a recent Oscar winner in the Best Supporting Actor category (Whiplash). Consequently, they don’t tell him about their latest plan to find and steal a long-lost collection of Nazi gold that’s at the bottom of a Bosnian lake. To pull that off, they’ll apparently engage in lots of alpha-male antics — punching bad guys, flirting with ladies, and blowing things up — which director Steven Quale (working from a script by Besson and Richard Wenk) appears to have infused with maximum, over-the-top energy.

Headlined by Sullivan Stapleton — best known for his TV work on Cinemax’s Strike Back and NBC’s Blindspot, as well as such films as Animal Kingdom and 300: Rise of an EmpireRenegades should follow in the Besson tradition of delivering high-octane thrills in a decidedly outrageous manner.

You can check out its exclusive trailer above, and its premiere poster below. The film smashes its way into theaters on Feb. 3, 2017.
