The Renaissance is the latest in a string of hotel closures and rebrandings. In 2020, the nearby Westchester Hilton and Doral Arrowwood hotels in Rye Brook closed. The Westchester Hilton closed "due to unforeseen circumstances caused by the coronavirus pandemic." The Doral Arrowwood closed prior to the COVID-19 due to financial issues unrelated to the pandemic. It was later used to house critical front-line nurses during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In September 2020, the Ritz Carlton in downtown White Plains closed and plans were announced to replace it with a Marriott International Autograph Collection hotel in 2021.

The Renaissance Westchester stands on the property of what was once the Stouffer Inn, the site of a Dec. 4, 1980 fire that took the lives of 26 people and injured 24 others. At the time, a busboy was accused of starting the fire, but the conviction was overturned. The fire caused New York's legislature at the time to adopt a statewide fire code that would require hotels and other buildings to have fire sprinklers.
