What you need to remember from the previous “Ghostbusters” movies before seeing “Frozen Empire”

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is set to bust its way into theaters this weekend and with it comes a whole host of beloved characters returning to the phantom-filled franchise, including several members of the original Ghostbusters. Given that it’s been almost three years since director Jason Reitman (whose father Ivan directed the first two Ghostbusters installments) gave the series a second life with his 2021 revival Ghostbusters: Afterlife, it makes sense that some of the film’s finer points may have gotten caught in a ghost trap or two in your brain.

So before you grab your popcorn and your proton packs, here are all the key names and details you need to remember before seeing Frozen Empire.

The new crew

Ghostbusters: Afterlife saw the formation of a brand new generation of Ghostbusters after quick-witted teen Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) discovered that she was actually the granddaughter of the late scientist Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis). In order to prevent the end of the world, Phoebe enlisted the help of her pal Podcast (Logan Kim), older brother Trevor (Finn Wolfhard), and his friend Lucky (Celeste O’Connor) to defeat Gozer the Gozerian for a second time in franchise history. Phoebe's mom, Callie (Carrie Coon), and her boyfriend, Gary (Paul Rudd), were also along for the ride.

An Afterlife post-credit scene showed the Ecto-1 driving through New York City, signifying that the Spengler family had decided to make a move to the Big Apple to carry on Egon’s legacy as a new team of Ghostbusters.

The OGs (Original Ghostbusters)

The original Ghostbusters team, who saved the world in 1984's Ghostbusters and 1989's Ghostbusters II, is comprised of Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), and the late Egon Spengler (Ramis). The team, who all went on to have their own individual paranormal careers since the '80s, reunited just in time to help Phoebe and her family take down Gozer once again in Afterlife.

Now, trailers for Frozen Empire have confirmed that the Ghostbusters will be rising to the call and helping defeat some new ghastly ghouls in the upcoming installment, including an evil spirit that Venkman describes as "tall, dark, and horny."

Some familiar phantoms

With the Spengler family now residing back in New York, multiple trailers for Frozen Empire have revealed that they'll soon be encountering a few famous phantoms on their adventures. That includes the Library Ghost, who first appeared in the original Ghostbusters, as well as the ever-hungry Slimer, who appeared in Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters II, and the franchise's 2016 female-led remake.

Joining those fan favorites are the murderous miniature iterations of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, a.k.a. Mini-Pufts, which made their delightful debut in Afterlife.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire hits theaters March 22.
