Dollar General's newest DG Market opened in Salina in a few weeks ago and is expected to offer more food options to people in the community.
The store, which opened on May 26 at 511 E. Iron Ave., promises to have more fresh food selections than a normal Dollar General.
As most supermarkets are located in the southern part of Salina, these fresh options are welcomed in this part of the city.
Since DG Market just opened, the shelves are still being stocked and a few items are not yet available. The produce section near the front of the store is currently empty, but other fresh items, including meats, have already arrived.
Customer Tanya Williams, who moved to Salina recently, said having the store at this location, closer to where she lives than other stores, is convenient.
"Me and my daughter even walk here almost every day," Williams said.
A newer, better location
DG Market replaces the Dollar General that was located on the main stretch of Santa Fe Avenue, but having the store on Iron offers the opportunity for it to be a standalone building and have more floor space for these new, fresh food options.
The process of opening the new store went by pretty quickly, with some regular customers surprised.
"We walked down to the (Santa Fe store) and then realized it was closed," Williams said.
According to the Dollar General website, the new store offers not only fresh, frozen and dry food options and other general merchandise that would typically be found at a Dollar General, but also DG contains a selection of home and seasonal décor items.
Customers can use pickup and delivery options like DG Pickup and DoorDash. It also has other services, including money transferring with Western Union and shipping with FedEx.
