The Best Style Moments of 2023

Barbiecore. Friendship bracelets. Silver fashions. Those are just a few of the terms — courtesy of Margot Robbie's Barbie press tour, and Taylor Swift and Beyoncé's record breaking concerts — that helped define the year in style.

2023 also featured Sarah Jessica Parker's Carrie Bradshaw dressed in one of the character's most meaningful (and emotionally-charged) looks of all time, and Pedro Pascal leaning into his Internet-appointed title: daddy. Scroll through these and more unforgettable moments right here.

Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie’s dolled-up red carpet ensembles had us all screaming, “Hi, Barbie!” The actress, 33, teamed with stylist Andrew Mukamal and the biggest fashion houses as she toured the globe in custom reinterpretations of the Mattel doll’s iconic looks. Not only did “Barbie outfits” become the No. 1 trending search in
the outfit inspo category in the U.S. (according to Google’s 2023 Year in Search recap), but moviegoers who watched the film in their own Barbie
cosplay spammed the Internet with a sea of pink for months on end.

Here, from left to right, she wears custom Moschino inspired by the 1964 Sparkling Pink Barbie on July 3, custom Prada inspired by the 1964 Black Magic Ensemble Barbie on Nov. 27, custom Atelier Versace inspired by the 1985 Day to Night Barbie on July 2, custom Vivienne Westwood inspired by the 1960 Enchanted Evening Barbie on July 12, custom Schiaparelli inspired by the 1960 Solo in the Spotlight Barbie on July 9 and custom Valentino inspired by the 2015 Pink &  Fabulous Barbie on June 25.

Beyoncé

When it comes to nailing onstage fashion, Beyoncé is definitely that girl. For her first solo world tour in six years, to support the 2022 release of her Renaissance album, Mrs. Carter, 42, performed her fantastical three-hour set in a parade of showstopping looks (many of them in her favorite color, silver) complete with Tiffany & Co. jewels, plus an array of statement sunglasses, hats and boots.

Here, from left to right, she rocks a custom Mugler jacket, bodysuit and boots on Sept. 4, custom Balmain on June 27, custom Danielle Frankel on Sept. 1. and custom Miu Miu on July 29.

As the former president and executive creative director of J.Crew, Jenna Lyons, 55, is used to people having an opinion on her clothing. But when she wore jeans (albeit with a Saint Laurent blazer and tie) instead of the typical glam dress to the Real Housewives of New York season 14 reunion, she wasn’t prepared for the negative online reaction. “I am just shocked and amazed at the attention it got,” she told People. “I didn’t realize it would be so controversial. This idea that I can’t wear [jeans] to a reunion, or I was somehow a faux pas—who made the rules?”

Kate Middleton and Princess Charlotte

Kate Middleton and Princess Charlotte had an epic mother-daughter matching moment at King Charles III and Queen Camilla’s coronation. Both the Princess of Wales, 41, and her daughter, 8, adorned their braided updos with silver bullion and crystal flower headpieces designed by Alexander McQueen and milliner Jess Collett. And while she’s still years away from wearing her first actual tiara (that will likely happen on her wedding day), Princess Charlotte has proved she’s already up to the task.

Gwyneth Paltrow

The Goop founder, 51, delivered a master class in “quiet luxury” dressing with her understated yet pricey wardrobe (much of which came from her own brand G. Label by Goop) while appearing in a Utah courtroom in March to testify in a civil case brought against her by Terry Sanderson, a retired optometrist she collided with on Deer Valley’s Bandana ski run in 2016. The verdict: Paltrow won the case and our title of best-dressed defendant.

Kim Kardashian, 43, wore a custom Schiaparelli Haute Couture dress featuring 50,000 freshwater pearls that took more than 1,000 hours to complete. Despite the intricate craftsmanship, the reality star’s daughter North West, 10, was unimpressed. In an episode of The Kardashians she remarked, “I like the pearls.
I just don’t like that it looks, like, from the dollar store.”

Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw

Season 2 of And Just Like That . . . gave fans an iconic fashion flashback when Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) attended the fictional Met Gala in her Vivienne Westwood wedding gown from the 2008 Sex and the City movie. It was a cathartic choice for the grieving widow, who updated the look with teal accents, plus a bird on her head as a nod to her first (failed) trip to the altar with Mr. Big. “It was very special to have it back in our possession and to figure out how it helped tell this story now,” Parker said of the moment, adding, “Thank goodness it fit!”

Taylor Swift’s Swifties are so powerful that they literally caused an earthquake in Seattle during the 34-year-old hitmaker’s record-breaking Eras Tour. They also rocked the fashion world with a 915 percent increase in the sales of friendship bracelet kits (according to data from Klarna) as trading stacks of colorful, Swift-coded arm candy became the thing to do at one of her shows. Here, Jennifer Garner, as well as Lupita Nyong'o and Sarah Paulson and their sisters show off their armfuls.

She may have arrived at the Met Gala more than an hour after the other guests went inside, but per usual, Rihanna was worth the wait. The star, 35, hit the carpet on May 1, wearing lash-adorned sunglasses and custom Valentino Haute Couture look that included a cape covered in camellia appliqués, which she removed to reveal a drop waist gown that highlighted her baby bump.

Pedro Pascal’s been declared the Internet’s daddy—and he dressed the part. The Last of Us and Mandalorian star, 48, leaned into his newfound title in an array of dapper yet relaxed ensembles expertly styled by Julie Ragolia and featuring everything from crochet sweaters and wide-leg trousers to oversize glasses and Chelsea boots.

Here, from left to right, he wears Gucci on Feb. 28, Acne Studios on Feb. 22 and Maison Margiela on April 28.
