AFROPUNK: Brooklyn 2023 was a vibrant look into how cultures collide as artists across the diaspora came together for a special two-day celebration.

After Jazmine Sullivan’s unfortunate cancelation, she revealed that she’d be replaced by Teyana Taylor in what the latter declared to be fans’ last chance to experience “The Last Rose Petal” live.

The festival, held on August 26-27 for the first time at Greenpoint Terminal Market, featured additional performances from Flying Lotus, Joey Bada$$, Vince Staples, Toby Nwigwe, Baby Tate, Durand Bernarr, and more.

Day one of AFROPUNK transformed the picturesque backdrop into a “Circus Of Soul” with two stages, a devoted area for local vendors, and stunning views of the New York City skyline. The theme was described as “a carnivalesque exhibition that spotlights all aspects of Black creativity, soundtracked by music that speaks to the heart of the Black experience.”

To continue the commemoration of Hip-Hop’s 50th anniversary, Staples and rap group Beatnuts had fans going up before Nwigwe surprised attendees with Earthgang. Jazz singer, Madison McFerrin, and thriving phenom, Durand Bernarr, lured fans into their gaze with gems from their jazz and R&B discographies. Later, headliner Flying Lotus closed out the evening with performing hits from his storied catalogue, including ones from his acclaimed Yasuke album.

The following day, Joey Bada$$ delivered a dynamic set at sunset while local DJs, DJ Mahogany and DJ SNS kept the energy up between performances by Sudan Archives, Dreamer Isioma, Baby Tate, and others.

Taylor came out of retirement as she gifted her fans live renditions of “Wake Up Love” with her husband, Iman Shumpert, “How You Want It” sans King Combs, and “Rose In Harlem” with her daughters, Junie and Rue.

AFROPUNK BROOKLYN 2023 continues the brand’s 20-year reign as a safe haven for “Black alternative culture.”
