Reginae Carter has always had an eye for style.

“I used to steal my mother’s clothes,” the 24-year-old TV personality, author and fashion designer told PEOPLE. “Mom used to be like, ‘Why are you in my closet?’ I was like, ‘I'm going to school fly.’”

Fans have followed her bold fashion and beauty moves (“I’ve always been extra — but good extra! It’s me,” she says) dating back back to her Growing Up Hip-Hop: Atlanta days. It’s one of many attributes that made Carter the perfect candidate to front NYX Professional Makeup’s NYX Mon-Stars Halloween campaign with Landon Barker and more rising stars now.

For it, the makeup brand and Universal Studios partnered to put a new spin on iconic and beloved monsters. Carter took on the role of a “The Mummi Twins” alongside model Sydney Bell. Meanwhile, Barker starred as “The Werewolf,” while up comers Phoenix Brown and Grace McKagan appeared as “Bride of Frankie” and “Drakulah,” respectively.

Ahead of a bash to celebrate the campaign (hosted by Carter and featuring performances by Barker and Lil Wayne — Reginae’s dad!), PEOPLE caught up with the star to talk about this major partnership, her beauty routine and more.

Carter sat in hair and makeup (the latter created by special effects makeup artist Mimi Choi), for about seven hours to transform into a mummy — an experience she says was well worth the wait.

“Working with NYX was super-fun. I had a whole bunch going on,” she says of the intricate look created using NYX Professional Makeup’s Ultimate Shadow Palette in Warm Neutrals and Spiky Fringe Jumbo Lash on her eyes, Lip Lingerie XXL Matte Liquid Lipstick in Knockout for her lips and teeth drawn with the Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk and Epic Ink Liner in Black. “Nobody could tell me I wasn't a mummy. I was feeling myself.”

She smiles, and adds, “We got to play with makeup. Who doesn’t love makeup?” Carter certainly does, and if you are one of the 7 million people following her on Instagram, you know just how much.

It’s something she gets from her mom and Toya & Reginae costar, Toya Johnson. “I always knew about glam just automatically from her. She is a glamor girl. So, I've always been a girly girl.”

Carter has a confession, though: She and her mom are makeup novices. But, Carter says, she’s learning tips and tricks from her makeup pros, friends in the know and social media. “I love looking at anything with hair and makeup on TikTok [because] I want to learn how [to do my makeup].”

The boosts in confidence prompted Carter not to panic when her makeup artist had a last-minute cancellation. “I said, ‘You know what? NYX just sent me all this stuff. I'm about to do me a face!’ That was my first time using a concealer on my face. All I [applied] was that and a little blush and a little highlighter, and it was a thing. And I was really proud of myself. I called my mom and everything.”

Even though she’s still getting her bearings, there’s one category she loves above all else: lips.

“My mom actually used to say when I was probably like six, seven years old ‘Nae, what do you want your lips to be so glossed?’ I couldn't wear red. My mom was like, ‘No.’ But I could wear fun dark colors. Now I just love me a cute lip.”

NYX Professional Makeup serves up some of her faves. “I love all of their lippies,” she says.

Carter adds that she’s “big into skin” and as such, she makes sure her getting unready routine after a day wearing makeup is on point. She had an extra-fun time documenting herself removing her makeup after the Halloween campaign shoot. “I was tired, but I was doing all these TikToks of myself calling my friends and they were like, ‘What have you done to your face?’ It was fun.”

Carter is still in celebration-mode post campaign, and she’s taking the vibe right into November, when she will toast to her milestone 25th birthday. Her goals, she says, include, to “stay healthy. That's my number one, because there's so much going on in this world, and keep great energy around me. I just want to be a better me — and get these coins.”

As for her beauty philosophy, Carter shares, it’s about “just being confident. I love the fact that I can love myself. And whatever I do add on, that's just me wanting to add on. I know that the beauty is me, I don't have to add anything to be beautiful. I just choose to, because it's fun.”
