The NPR offices have rarely been this twee. Fresh off the release of her new album Home, before and after, Regina Spektor swung by to perform a handful of new and old songs for her Tiny Desk Concert.

Spektor began the set with “Tiny Song,” a short a capella ditty she wrote that day about her travels to the Tiny Desk: “Took a train from New York to D.C./ And everyone was coughing on me/ But I wore a real tight mask/ And got myself a negative COVID test/ So that I could sing to you behind this tiny desk,” she sang with a beaming smile as the audience chuckled off-camera.

With just her voice and an upright piano, Spektor then played the Home, before and after singles “Loveology” and “Becoming All Alone,”  pausing in-between to take much-needed swigs from her water bottle on the crowded bookcase behind her: “It’s kinda hard to take water from those shelves because I keep just being drawn to read all the little notes and read everything, and then I have to remind myself that you’re here,” she said shyly. “I should probably sneak half an hour and just check it all out, whoever works here.”

The latter half of Spektor’s Tiny Desk Concert consisted of three highlights from her 2006 album Begin to Hope: “Après Moi,” “Samson,” and her breakout single “Fidelity.” You can watch the full performance below.

Spektor recently spoke to Consequence about making Home, before and after, her first album in over five years. Later this month, Spektor will release a special box set commemorating the 20th anniversary of her debut album 11:11. She’s currently on tour across the US performing at some not-tiny venues; get tickets to see her over at Ticketmaster.
